What Size Water Heater Do You Have?

Look on the side of your water heater for a sticker or label. On that label, you’ll see something that says “Capacity” or “Capacity (U.S. Gallons).”
That number tells you the size of your tank. Most homes have either a 40-gallon or 50-gallon water heater.

What Type of Vent Do You Have?

Atmospheric Vent

This type of vent uses a metal vent pipe that goes straight up, usually through the roof. It relies on natural airflow — hot air rises and carries exhaust gases out of your home. You’ll often see it connected to a metal pipe coming off the top of the tank.

Power Vent

This vent uses a small fan or blower to push exhaust out through a plastic pipe, usually going out the side wall of your house. Power vent models need an electrical outlet nearby since the fan runs on power.

Electrical Vent

This type of water heater doesn’t have a vent pipe and you see an electrical wire or conduit going into the top or side.
